The term of office of the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) for 2021–2026, Prof. Dr. Muryanto, S.Sos, M.Si, will end on 28 January 2026. Pursuant to Government Regulation No. 16 of 2014, Article 29(4), the Rector Election shall be held no later than five (5) months before the Rector’s term ends. Following this mandate, USU will conduct the election of the Rector for the 2026–2031 term. On 19 August 2025, the USU Board of Trustees (MWA) formed and appointed the Committee for the Screening and Election of Candidates for Rector of USU for the 2026–2031 Term, by MWA USU Decree Number 7/UN5.1.MWA/SK/TP.00.00/2025.
The committee comprises four (4) members from the MWA—Prof. Dr. Tamrin, M.Sc.; Fadhullah, SE, MM; Dr. Husni Thamrin, S.Sos, MSP; and Ir. Indra Chahaya S, M.Si; three (3) members from the USU Academic Senate—Boy Laksamana, SH, M.Hum; Mhd. Pujiono, SS, M.Hum, Ph.D; and Dr. Muhammad Anggia Muchtar, S.T, MM.IT; three (3) members from the USU Council of Professors—Prof. Drs. Heru Santosa, MS, Ph.D; Prof. Dr. Ameta Primasari, drg., MDSc, M.Kes, Sp.MM; Prof. Dr. Apri Heri Iswanto, S.Hut, M.Si, and one (1) member from the USU Rectorate—Prof. Dr. Ir. Luhut Sihombing, MP.
The Committee for the Screening and Election of Candidates for Rector of USU for the 2026–2031 term invites Indonesian citizens who meet the requirements to become Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara for the 2026–2031 term. The election process will be carried out in three (3) stages: Screening, Shortlisting, and Election.
The Screening Stage will take place from 28 August to 24 September 2025, covering registration, submission of forms, administrative screening, announcement of candidates who pass the administrative screening, and auditions. Rector Candidates will present their track record and achievements, entrepreneurship, program plans, and proposed breakthroughs at the auditions. They will also convey their leadership vision and mission, insights about USU, and strategic plans that refer to USU’s General Policy and Long-Term Development Plan. The auditions will be attended by all members of the USU Academic Senate (who will later vote during the shortlisting), and will also be attended by the MWA, Academic Senate, Council of Professors, Rectorate, Deans, Directors, Heads of Institutes/Bodies, Department Chairs, Study Program Chairs, Bureau Heads, representatives of community leaders, student representatives, alumni representatives, and other elements to be designated by the committee.
The USU Academic Senate will conduct the shortlisting stage on 25 September 2025. At this stage, all 112 members will cast votes to determine three (3) Rector Candidates to be submitted to the USU Board of Trustees.
The USU Board of Trustees will conduct the Election Stage, scheduled for 2 October 2025, to elect and appoint the USU Rector for the 2026–2031 term.
This was conveyed by the Committee Chair Prof. Dr. Tamrin, M.Sc, to several representatives of print and electronic media in Medan, on Wednesday (27 August 2025). Tamrin added that it is hoped the process will result in the selection of a Rector who meets all requirements and possesses comprehensive capabilities—able to address all challenges to realize USU as a “Campus with Impact,” mobilize funding from USU’s potential resources, and elevate USU’s quality and standing at both the national and global levels.
