MEDAN – HUMAS USU: Dr. Nurmala Kartini Pandjaitan Sjahrir was unanimously elected as Chairperson of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) Board of Trustees (MWA) for the 2020–2025 term on Friday (24/10/2020). Dr. Nurmala Kartini, the wife of the late Dr. Sjahrir—one of Indonesia’s renowned economists—officially replaced the previous MWA Chairperson, Drs. Panusunan Pasaribu, M.M. The election was held online during the USU MWA plenary meeting, which was also attended by North Sumatra Provincial Secretary Ir. Hj. R. Sabrina, M.Si., on behalf of the Governor of North Sumatra.
The agenda of the plenary meeting included introductions of the 2020–2025 MWA members, handover of leadership from the previous Chair and Secretary, election and appointment of the new Chair and Secretary, and the formation of commissions along with the appointment of their respective chairs, secretaries, and members.
In addition to Dr. Nurmala Kartini Pandjaitan as Chairperson, Prof. Dr. Guslihan Dasa Tjipta was elected as MWA Secretary, Muhammad Arifin Nasution as Chair of Commission I, and Puspa Melati as its secretary.
Separately, USU MWA member Dr. Abdul Hakim Siagian, S.H., M.Hum., expressed confidence that under the leadership of Dr. Nurmala Kartini Pandjaitan, MWA would elevate USU’s already impressive performance even further. He acknowledged the increasingly complex challenges ahead but believed that strong collaboration between MWA and the Rectorate would help USU become a university of international standing.
He also praised the performance of USU Rector, Prof. Runtung Sitepu, who has led the university to remarkable achievements. “USU is now among the elite group of top Indonesian universities and is ranked in Cluster I nationally. That is a significant accomplishment,” he said.
“The teamwork built by the Rector deserves the highest appreciation. Many advances have been made, and a solid foundation has been laid, enabling USU to compete globally as it becomes a World Class University,” added Dr. Abdul Hakim Siagian. (RJ)
